Africa Shades of Light
Loving the Little Children of the World
Nicole Katongole
HELLO!
My name is Nicole. I grew up in the sun of Western Colorado in a small town known for peaches. My life was surrounded by generous love, a large family, and the wonders of the great outdoors. I unknowingly experienced the graces and miracles of the Lord from a young age but did not truly surrender my life to the Lord until after my freshman year of college.
In 2017, I traveled to Haiti and it was there that the Lord began to radically transform my heart. I felt the overwhelming joy of serving and the surrender of self as I saw aching sorrow and tired eyes and held them with grace and empathy. In the places where words lacked, love and kindness abounded: warm smiles and gentle hands displayed Jesus’ profound love for His people.
My experience in Haiti exposed the mutual poverty of all of humanity: a poverty of spirit. I was as wholly broken as the hands of the ones I was holding, and I knew then, as I know now, Jesus alone stands as our redeemer to save and to reconcile. My experience in Haiti begged the question:
What would my life look like if I faithfully pursued the Lord and sought to actively respond to His commandments?
I could tell you I began to answer that question the moment I moved across the world to Uganda, but the truth is my story began long before then. God pursued me for years before I recklessly abandoned all expectation and purpose to follow Him. I was baptized in 2017, after arriving home from Haiti; I counted the cost and chose to wholeheartedly follow Jesus. My life began the moment I surrendered to give my life to love and serve the Lord and others. That was the moment my journey in ministry began - a journey of love, learning, and leaning more wholly and deeply upon the Almighty.
In December 2020, I moved across the world to Uganda. Little did I know then that I would meet my husband, Acram, upon my arrival. We reside in the countryside of Uganda and serve together with Africa Shades of Light Ministry to love the little children of the world and to be a light in shaded places that others may know and experience the God of all creation and make Him known.
This is my story. This is our story.
We hope it strengthens and encourages you.
With love,
Nicole Katongole
